Yep. I learned typing in 7th grade and became ridiculously fast (70+wpm on a manual). This was circa 1960. A few years later I was banging away on keypunch machines. Here’s a nice quote from the article about the keyboard that came with IBM’s early PC: ...except for the keyboard, which many people in the hobby view as the greatest of all time. That keyboard, called the Model F, was the product of a multi-year effort at I.B.M., whose keyboard-development department was run by Lou Sedaris (the father of David and Amy). The department’s goal was to replicate the experience of typing on a Selectric.
