I had mixed feelings at the time. On the one hand, the invisible tilde made encoded matter more
readable in non-eXPanded views; on the other, it made the encoding somewhat less transparent in
those views. On balance, I tend to agree with you that the caret would have been a better choice. My
problem with changing it now is that I have 15 years' worth of XYENCoded stuff -- mainly, encrypted
text -- that uses the tilde, which I'd still need the current XYDEC to decode. Unless the new XYDEC
were able to detect which encoding was used, which seems iffy.
