Flash,
Funny, I have been using NB3 for exactly the opposite reason, Xy3 format
codes are the easy way to do automatic formatting in desktop publishing
and XML publications via custom filters. Very suitable for catalogs and
dictionaries where there are a lot character formatting changes.
As to unformatted text to desktop publishing in that kind of setting you
describe, my choice has for many years been Editpad + Xara Designer.
Pure text in Editpad and formatting in Xara. These are the tools that I
use for translation work where there are graphical elements that have to
be incorporated. I put them on the lowest layer, use a second layer to
mask eventual text in the original language, put my translation on top
of that. Xara reminds me of Quark but far better in many ways. (A tip:
you can do desktop publishing with a basic el-cheapo (under $50) Xara
web designer program when you add page layout files from a trial version
of any of the same generation Xara desktop publisher packages; in any
case, buy a CD or permanent download if you are interested; in spite of
what it seems it is also possible to buy a permanent license for the
current top product, I put this link as it is almost impossible to
locate otherwise: https://www.xara.com/designerpro/v20/).
I bought Signature and all the tech docs. Never got to the stage of
actual use. Signature is very important for all the technical
innovations that it contains and that made Xy4 what it is. It is a
milestone in Xy development. There is hardly a reason to prefer it to Xy4.
Best regards,
Kari Eveli

Carl,
ME ME ME, I'm still using 3.58B, the principle reason being that I do
only bulk text input with it, no formatting or printing at all. All
formatting and printing I do in Adobe Pagemaker, which has a Xy3 (but
not a Xy4) import filter.
Not using Signature.
