If you like that kind of thing, you could try Typeit app. Of the competition, I think this is one of the best, the defaults work quite nicely (e.g. in French). Download first the trial version.

Thanks for this, Kari. As someone who normally makes minimal use of accented characters, I find Holdkey (https://holdkey.eu/) to be handy.

(Although it interferes with the operation of the XyWrite keyboard file, it is easily enabled|disabled via a Windows keyboard shortcut.)
