files not seen and "too many letters in filename" error

Something amiss here. Occasionally , Xy cannot see (many) files that a
CMD.EXE dir command show to be present in the directory Xy is logged
into. Correlatively, occasionally, I try to CAll a file that XyWrite
does  show in the directory but get "Too many letters in file
name" (and that's patently not the case). 

Any ideas?
