Re: QuickNotes

Thanks very much for your comments, Martin. I really appreciate the feedback.

I've been tinkering with the notes panel. Made some important changes and fixed a nasty little bug.
First, you can now hide the notes panel. There is new menu item under options; also, new commands
SNP / CNP / TNP to Show / Clear / Toggle the notes panel, and a new reserved variable $NP which
returns 1 if the notes panel is displayed, else 0. The "text-like" files listed in the
notes panel are now taken from the current directory as shown on the command line. If you CD or CD/D
to a different directory, the notes panel listing will be refreshed accordingly. As per your
request, filenames without extensions are treated as text-like and thus displayed. The now-defunct
bug was that, when scrolling through the files in the notes panel, QuickNotes was not just reading
but also rewriting the files as it displayed them in the editing window. The result was that files
not encoded in UTF-8 -- which includes XyWrite-formatted files and XPL programs -- were being
mangled. Claude was abl!

Oh yes, that should be doable. There is an INPUT keyword that takes user input and assigns it to a
variable. If you'd like to send me your XPL routine privately, I could mock up a QPL equivalent for
you.

Sync'ed scrolling is imperfect, to be sure. It isn't high on my list of priorities just now, but
I'll keep it in mind as a feature that needs attention.

Crashes? That's bad. I haven't had any crashes here; I'm running Win 11. What version of Windows are
you running? QN may not be 100% compatible with versions earlier than 10. I'll have Claude
double-check the "Auto-hide menu bar" plumbing.

No, but it's on the punch list. I'm open to suggestions, certainly. Right now, if you start QN with
python quicknotes.py, the Python icon is what appears on the taskbar.

I can reproduce that here. The way around it is to use Wengier Wu's start.exe. (If you don't hav
it, it's in U2EXTRAS.ZIP, on the XyWWWeb page.) Change the target to "d:\path\start.exe /hid
python.exe d:\path\quicknotes.py"; the /HID switch bypasses the command window. (Start.exe also
gives QN a different icon.)

This is a great idea. I'm not ready to take it on now, but will look into it in due course(!).

Many thanks for your comments on Chapter 6 of the manual. I'll work them in on the next go-around.
