You're adding a new data point -- that, contrary to my assumption, /home/bnewell was in fact the CWD when you issued your "xyscript" command. That changes my conclusion, not my reasoning: on your facts, 'xyscript foo.txt' should indeed open /home/bnewell/foo.txt. I was able to reproduce the error with my Ubuntu VM.
