Thanks, Bob. > 5 MB is not a huge file. But I think it tests the practical limits > of a single working text file that is anything other than an > artificial construction. True enough, with the notable exception of certain references files. I regularly consult a half dozen or so plain-text dictionary and thesaurus files in the 10 - 30 MB range, and I'm pleased to say that navigating around these files is effortless in XyScript. But I'm not done, yet, with big files, so stay tuned for the next release. I enjoy browsing in the Project Gutenberg version of the 1911 Encyclopedia Britannica, which I've compiled into a single 265 MB file. I've saved it here as a UTF-8 file, which XyScript handles smoothly: https://ammaze.net/xywwweb/dls/EB1911.ZIP. Following yesterday's release, I optimized XyScript to handle CP437 versions of the Britannica file. In my testing after these optimizations, navigation in a 4 GB (that's GIGAbyte) UTF-8 file proved to be effortless. Ideally, I'd like XyScript to be able to open and edit text files of any size, limited only by availabl memory. I feel I'm a step closer to that ideal. -- Carl Distefano cld@xxxxxxxxxx
