My practice has been to make sure the gadget isn't blinking, i.e., copying
something, then remove it.  Hibernate occurred only after I'd activated the
icon and seen the message,  "Safely remove..."  Didn't try to "stop"
it.

Did you "Stop"
 the device first?  Did it respond "Safe to remove now" or some
such
 words?
