Another thought: if you decide on a Thinkpad, and if they're still built
that way (mine is an antique), try to avoid the swappable CD/DVD -floppy
arrangement. Unless your daughter has the hand-mind coordination of an
Olympic athlete (umm, come to think of it, if she plays the violin, maybe
she does and it's a non-issue). But I cannot get either drive properly
seated in the bay; only way to get data in or off is over the network or
on a parallel ZIP disk. Of course, a modern one would have USB, so one
could use a thumb drive, but I'll bet lost thumb drives are up there with
"the cat ate my homework" in the roster of collegiate disasters.
