There are a couple of ways to find out your IP address, or that of a
targert machine.
No, that wasn't my question. I know all the IP addresses. But never mind, I
have the icons and you are right--no need to go to "My Network Places" or
wander through Explorer levels. But this is very interesting:

2. If you are not logged onto the machine in question, then ping its
host name and note the reply.
