Hmmm. Will the day come when we won't need laptops, just a key drive that will plug into any computer (within certain hardware limits, of course) and make it function like your home computer? That seems to me to be the ideal. With desktops so cheap, you could expect every hotel room to have a computer for this use, and every friend should have a spare computer for his guests.
Yes, yes, yes. I've been thinking this more and more lately. The problem
with laptops (and PDAs) is that human eyes and human hands need screens
and keyboards of a certain mimimum size, which will always put a limit
to miniaturization. So have the keyboards and screens everywhere, and
let people just carry around their CPU, RAM, and software on some form
of permanent storage--all of which are steadily getting physically
smaller. Malware is an issue, but the ubiquitous KVM devices could do
what is done with our library PCs: whenever they're rebooted, they do a
System Restore to Day 1. Or maybe not even have an OpSys and storage.
