Re: Win 7 64 Bit [Metapad]

>Clipboard workarounds aside, I've had a copy of Editpad on my computer
for a long time. The version I have is ancient (dated Oct. 2008) and
the interface looks its age. My two requirements for a Notepad
alternative are compactness and portability. Basically, I want a small
EXEcutable, which doesn't need to be "installed", that I can plant in
my Xy4 directory and launch from the CMline when and as needed. At
645K, my old copy of Editpad fit the bill, whereas the current version
of Editpad -- a 9MB download -- is too big for my purposes.

>So Editpad has given way to a leaner, very capable, and free Notepad
substitute: Metapad (http://liquidninja.com/metapad/). The "full"
version of the EXEcutable is a mere 197K, the feature set extensive,
and the interface a pleasure to use. I love the Transparent Mode
toggle (Ctrl-U), which allows you to see through Metapad to the
window(s) below. Highly recommended.

Metapad seems to be a nice editor, and I perfectly concur that different uses require different editors. On the other hand, EditPad Lite 7 is very up-to-date (if an installed program fits your bill) and has all the bells and whistles you could ever want. Very robust, great configuration options, very good search and replace (e.g. regex support), two monitor support, etc. Most importantly, the EditPad Lite file type configuration option is very handy if you have text files with both ascii and ansi coding you want view properly without a conversion step (this finally solved my painful dual text file ascii/ansi dilemma, now I have TXB and TXA files which show correctly when viewing upper ascii characters, very important for languages like German, French or Finnish). This is missing in Metapad. Moreover, Metapad does not in work in Win 3.1 environment, whereas "Editpad 16bit" does (downloadable from: http://archive.org/details/EditPad16bit_1020). I have recently even tweaked Edit
pad 16bit to work with an OEM screen font in Win 3.1. Handles multimegabyte Xy files well even in
Win 3.1.
