fraction conversion (Xy3+) -- beginner question

Given my very rudimentary understanding of XPL, I have managed to write
search
and replace routines to convert typewriter-style fractions to
single-character
ASCII fractions (1-1/2 to 1½). It takes four steps to cover the
permutations of half and quarter, with and without hyphens. But when I
try to string them together, all Xy3+ will execute is the first step.
What am I missing?
