Win 95 settings for Xy???!

I'm sending along a message I received from the Library Master list.
Library Master is a DOS bibliographic database manager. I found the
suggestions rather surprising. In particular I wonder about
eliminating putting DOS into high memory.
I'm in the process of trying the suggestions with XyDOS 4.017
and XyWin 4.12. Is there anything here that might
help those of you having XyProblems with Win95?

Any comments on the suggestions? I'm not much of a techie, but I'd
like to get the most out of my resources for both DOS and Windows
programs.

The number one issue with instability in Windows 95 is the use of the
Microsoft Office manager program. Remove this from your startup folder and
restart your computer. This program has many known instabilities that can
cause problems iwht many programs. I also suggest you look at the FAQ
question on our Web site regarding Windows 95.

In general your problems seem to come from your CONFIG.SYS

> DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\HIMEM.SYS
> DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\EMM386.EXE NOEMS

Both of these should be removed from Windows 95. You are creating an
inherently unstable system with this. Both EMS and XMS are available from
Windows 95 directly (even for DOS programs). If you add this you are putting
16 bit code in your system which will slow it down.

> BUFFERS=50,0

Cut this out too.

> FILES=50

This is OK. You might increase the number to 75 if you run several DOS
programs.

> DOS=UMB

Cut it out.

> FCBS=4,0
> DOS=HIGH
> FCBSHigh=4,0
> DEVICEHIGH /L:1,9728 =C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND\ANSI.SYS

Cut out all of these too. Not required and not good.

> [COMMON]
> DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\MZTINIT.SYS /A220 /D3 /I11 /G /ca170 /e2 /ci15 /v7
> DEVICEHIGH /L:2,22928 =C:\MZTOAK\IDECDROM.SYS /D:MSCDOAK

I assume these are for your CD-ROM. Windows 95 ought to be able to able to
handle an IDE CDROM without this. Again, you are creating an unstable system
by including these. If it is not found go to device manager to see if you
can install it.

In general your CONFIG.SYS in Windows 95 should be very clean. In mine I
only have:

FILES=75

This is all you need.
