A good product for PDF conversion is ABBYY FineReader. You can use it
for scanning and OCR.


If you have an image PDF, you can convert it to Word or PDF with OCR
content, and many other formats.


I bought recently an HP Officejet Pro 8610 multifunction printer and
scanner. The included scanning software did not work for multipage
scanning of books, it stalled after a while (apparently a software
flaw), but with ABBYY I can scan a book just by turning the pages and
waiting for the software to do its magic (I can set an interval for
turning pages, no other manual intervention, no OK buttons, no Yes/No to
scan another page as in HP software).


ABBYY FineReader is not free. It is still a worthwhile investment if you
need this kind of software. You may get an older version for less money,
they do the trick quite well. E.g.

sells for $30 and runs on Win 7 and 8.
