There are at least two other options. One is to preview mail with a
webmail service (many are free; some ISPs provide their own, some of
which, like AT&T Worldnet's, filter out infected messages) and use
your browser to delete suspicious or unwanted messages on the
server. Another is to use a utility such as Hacksaw to do the same.
Having thus purged your inbox, you can use your regular mail program
to retrieve the remaining messages.

I'd ask the U.Penn. IT people about the anti-virus measures they've
adopted for mail-list traffic, but (grrr) they don't answer my mail
these days. Be that as it may, recent experience here and on the
NotaBene list shows that infected messages will find their way in,
so self-help (HEAR THAT, XYKZ?) is the order of the day.
