They're not "stray". SMTP mail servers are programmed to insert a
exclamation point followed by a CrLf (a/k/a bang-newline) when they
encounter a line in the message body that is longer than 1000
characters. The character count includes HTML tags if your program
is HTMLifying your messages, as Yahoo is.

Are you composing your messages in XyWrite and pasting them into
your browser? If so, you need to wrap lines with CrLf's at a
reasonable length (65-75 characters) before you clip and paste.
It's easy; just DeFine the message text and issue PUTCR.
