I'm not "encouraging" anybody to dump their security. You need

That may let me out. :)
And I do maintain several layers of
security, and keep lots of tools to deal with mishaps. I
manually OK *every* change to the Windows registry. A program
runs in background that flags execution of malware (actually
triggers about once a year).
Thanks for reminding me that I have to install, on my new computer, the
"watchdog" program, Winpatrol, from Bill P Studios. I recommend it. It's
freeware, but for about $30 you can get the "Plus" version which adds the
ability to see information about unfamiliarly named things that are loaded
on startup.
 Norman Virus Control scans
incoming emails and files that are written to disk for the first
time (triggers once in two years).

Thanks, I'm trying it out.
Fear is the worst virus of all.

Yeah, like self-censorship.
