Carl, Robert, Steve -- I made my DOS session for Xy-4 in ECS conform as closely as I could to Carl's suggested settings (attached to this message). It made no difference. Trap E as before, and the DOS fullscreen session *alone* without Xy or any other app. is enough to do it. That's proof enough for me. The next step is to backlevel from SDD Pro to SDD standard edition. I'll check that out, but quite possibly dump it in favor of the well-proven Matrox drivers. It would be nice to have the dual-head support and Zoom feature, said to be part of their "Pro"-successor package, Snap Graphics, but stability and being able to run DOS programs is a whole lot more important to me.
