Foreign characters in English text

(Xy3.57, Win98SE) I have an infrequent need to use foreign characters in
English text. The most used French characters I added to my LT keyboard;
others I have to find when I need them. Having just loaded up XYPower I
find that I have to abandon ALT-e which was my most used key.
Does anybody have a quick way of inserting these characters? I find using
help too laborious, and rarely bother.
