That certainly applies to one crowd of thesaurus-abusers. A
different crowd consists of writers who believe in perfect synonyms.

Examples of the latter are common among people new to writing
headlines: they value fit over meaning. ('Only the news that fits
we print.')

For a mixture, turn to almost any sports page -- heads & stories,
too.
