XY4 can not find drive

I have the weirdest little problem, can somebody help solve it? It is not a
big deal, just annoying.

I have a directory called d:\x. Suddenly XX4 has decided, it can not find
files there!
The command dir \x\*.* gives me a beep and an error message. No problem
like this on other directories. Also, I can go to \x\ and work there. I
just can not get a directory listing.
XY3 does not have this problem. Only XY4. I think it has come about
recently. Restarting does not help.
Any idea what could be going on?
