Within the past couple years someone on this list highly recommended an OCR program -- one _not_
from a U.S. company. It might have been Abby, but I'm not sure. There's another one called
Presto!, but I think they succumbed to ScanSoft too.

I have an old version of TextBridge -- from when Xerox had it, pre-ScanSoft. It was quite good, but
there was some defect in the language compiler from which it was made, and I think even the P3 CPUs
might have been running it too fast, resulting in fatal GPF crashes. I even started looking at some
"slowdown" utilities for running it, but it became clear that this would require an
extensive amount of trial and error tuning.
