civilities

I had a couple of reactions to Steve's note and to your follow-up
note about civilities. I've always enjoyed reading the things
people have written here, but I've gotten to know people by *how*
they've expressed themselves.

I'd feel a sense of loss at seeing messages sanitized to avoid
offending anyone. I was glad that Steve announced his sensitivity,
but I think we all gain more by promoting an open forum for expressing
ideas rather than by asking people to tailor their speech to someone
else's sensibilities.
