I haven't looked at the other replies yet, but WordPerfect 5.1 or 5.2 (DOS) is
very compact; you could send that as an intermediate format. Also, RTF files
aren't bad either for length. Consider, too, compacting your files with PKZip;
if you're concerned about the other end's abilities, make them self-extracting
Zip files.
