Smartset

Carl,
 I finally really read the notes for Smartset and have got it working. I'm
trying out the excellent programs one by one. IAs a New Yorker, I especially
love XSTREET. But I'm having problems with QUOTES. With even a one-half line
file with only two simple quote marks it hangs (or else takes longer than 4
minutes to run). I get the "Working ..." prompt and then nothing else. If I do
a ctrl-esc and stop it, it sometimes puts the curly quotes in (depending on how
long it has been running, I think). I'm running a 386 16MHz system. But no
results after 4 minutes on a 40-byte (not Kbyte) file is not due to slow system
speed.
  Any suggestions?
