This must a matter of choice. A virtualized DOS-supporting operating system can be as lightweight as
an emulator, and simpler to configure. My favorite is DOS/Win 3.1x, which is well supported by
Virtual PC 2004-2007. Win 3.1x may seem a bit awkward, but by changing the progman shell to Calmira
or, better still, to the Praxim command line, it becomes very palatable.

Calmira has a Win95 or XP look-and-feel, and is freeware:

There may still be copies of Praxim stashed away somewhere at Wesson: http://www.wesson.com/index.html
Drop them an email if this is of interest. They do not advertise this marvel, but when I asked them
some (it may be 10) years ago, there still were copies.
