Doug,

Normally I would agree with you. Indeed, since my name is mentioned by
Jack in praise I feel rfeluctant to respond at all, but yet I must: in all
honesty I have long contemplated saying the following and have waited for
the right moment to do so. That moment has arrived, so here goes nothing:

It has occurred to me that on this list, or any other list for that matter,
a "Gresham's Law" applies: bad posts drive out good posts. I am sure that
there are many subscribers to this list who perhaps wanted to post something
that others may well have found of value, but refrained thinking it would
only provoke more blather. We shall never no how many other Annie Fishers
and Robert Holmgrens lurking out there have decided against
posting here for fear of provoking more useless and narcissistic palaver
from the anti-Gatesians who dwell herein.

So I would like to take a moment to salute Jack Shafer for his post and also
to encourage lurkers to post here anyway. Some of us do indeed want to
learn something.

Please understand, Doug, that I don't consider you to be among the crowd I
am criticizing here and be assured that I personally bear you no ill will
whatsoever.

Regards,
