Harry has said is true. I would just add (having tested it today) that merely having a network card (or, more likely nowadays, networking circuitry in you mobo), isn't enough. You need to have a Cat 5 cable from your Network port plugged into a powered switch--or, I suppose, a cable or DSL modem. And you need to declare the printer shared under Windows first.
Sounds right. I use a router, and I'm cabled in. But the cost of a new
printer today is very low and so is the cost of a router. Amazon lists a
new HP DeskjetD2320 for $39.99, and A D-link (never heard of them) used
router for $19.99.

I don't understand this. You can work in the same draft view as Xy has. The
bytes actually stored are the same as in Xy (maybe not for fancy ANSI, but
for regular typewriter key stuff it is).
