Yes, well that is what I was talking about -- using cheap older
computers -- 233mhz-500mhz for instance, people almost give them away.
If you use xy4, get freedos and you're golden. If you *really* just
can't live without a gui, they still work great with w95 and xywin. Or
use linux. Back when I was head of systems for a college of medicine, we
had a 266mhz box running linux for the email server for all the med and
nursing students AND the faculty and researchers (over 500 accounts),
and another just like it for the web server.
Why do people get conned into buying 3ghz boxes and vista???? I mean
if you are playing video games all day or working as a film editor, I
can see it, but for writing??? Having said this, I have to confess to
typing it on a 2.1ghz box running the latest Debian. But actually it's
not noticeably faster than my 500mhz laptop, except for boot up, which I
almost never do, maybe 6 times a year. Well, yes, I can keep waaay more
windows open, meaning I have 20 or so different websites pulled up on
firefox all the time -- for what I have no clue.
I've given up trying to actually *work* on this machine.
