Apology

Dear Mr. Sivin:

> Robert Holmgren:
> > I apologize for interrupting while you upbraid Kenneth Frank...

Did I? I didn't hear that. I thought I complimented the man!
Made a helpful suggestion or two. Ahhh -- you're not squirming
on his behalf in some moderator role, are you? Is it an
etiquette issue? I mean, I confess that I _have_ been just a wee
bit peeved on one or two occasions because he not only never
visited his own BBS (his house organ, after all, where expert
assistance is available, where we paid to subscribe and made toll
calls), and not only couldn't we contact Mr. Frank even
indirectly, but it became gradually obvious that his own
employees couldn't or wouldn't communicate our views, which spun
pointlessly and then pretty much died in the hands of a powerless
SysOp. Meanwhile, he was hanging out with you guys or over on
CIS? Dandy.

Anyway, your apology is ACCEPTED -- don't give it another
thought, no lingering moping or morbidity, life goes on!

My "highly customized" KBD doesn't work, unlike yours.
BTW, when I "got xywrite xywrite" the other day, all the msgs
mirrored to my address were pre-1995 - 12/08/94 is the most
recent - can I request riper stuff? - so I didn't read your msg
of 2 weeks ago.

On the substance, do I detect an argument for one protocol over
another? I don't know about you; but the reason I'm devoted to
XyWrite is its extraordinary roll-your-own flexibility,
accommodating different approaches. Your CUA, my whatever-it-is.
Ironically, over at TTG BBS discussion wound up down and all
around these issues, the KBD file et al., since XyWin was
published two years ago; and initially there was deep denial by
Tech Support of the problems I mentioned again (very gently and
tangentially) here a few days ago, until it was all demonstrated
ad nauseum and Tech Support acknowledged that they could have
given, but chose not to give, the *user option* of dumping
Windows CUA, just as they might have given, but did not, a
*selection* of screen fonts. And blah blah blah.

Instead of rehashing tiresome XyWin minutia, since you want
evidence perhaps I could collect some of the messages from TTG on
XyWin<==>XyDOS incompatibilities, going back two years (two YEARS
for the FIRST bug fix! near-zero forward development!! that sums
it up) and post them to you at your private address -- if that
doesn't violate your conference rules -- although it may violate
TTG rules, I dunno?

Very good of you to administer this conference. Look forward to
participating when I emerge next autumn from annual computer
detox.
