NTVDM
Herewith NB's answer to my query about the program leaving an orphan
NTVDM session after you exit.

I'm afraid that we know of no way to ensure that NTVDM.EXE is ended
when an NB session is closed. The only way to definitively end that
process on your system is to do so via the Task Manager. After
closing NB, press Ctrl+Alt+Del to open the Task Manager, click on the
Processes tab, find NTVDM.EXE, and click End Process.
