Re: OT: Death To Word, Final Word

Hi, friends.

RE: Mac font  - - - It looks to me as those Mail is using Helvetica.  I don't recall changing any defaults, so that might be what comes out of the box. It is one of the system fonts.

I switched to Mac five or six years ago, and have found nothing that I like as well as XyWrite.

For general writing chores, memos and notes for my students, I use RTF format.  Bean is one of the rtf editors. If you need more features, Nisus Writer Pro is probably the best available, although it is a commercial product.

Mellel is academically oriented, and makes interesting use of styles. It has an unusual file format, though.

If you use LaTeX, there are several nice freebies out there.  TexShop is the most well-developed.

TextMate is probably the best text and programming-language editor.

And the latest rage is for "clean" ASCII text only editors with a variety of appealing characteristics:  iAWriter, OmmWriter, Ulysses (good for organizing writing projects).

It is possible that eMacs is as flexible as XyWrite, but I find it much more difficult to work with.

One feature of XyWrite that I have *never* seen elsewhere, and which I frequently used, was "Save/Gets".  It was remarkably well thought out both for long-term use and on-the-fly editing. I have suggested some of its features to numerous programmers of keyboard-shortcut and clipboard applications, but so far no one sees the point.

Hey, Flash. Thanks a million. I have been looking for a good Mac editor. One question: what is the standard Mac font? The one used in Mail, for instance, which may or may not be the Lion system font.
