Re: Nota Bene

As a long-time but still novice XyWriter, I've benefited greatly from this
group in the year I've been on board (and been entertained by the digressions
- as in the Xy-name suggestions for Sherry's imminent offspring) . The
recent posting by Anne Putnam about Nota Bene prompts me to ask listees for
advice.
I am using XyWin 4.12 on a Gateway computer with 500 MHz, 128 MB RAM and
a 10 GB hard drive with Windows 98 - and am about to install (have Gateway
install - I even had trouble with slave and master when I tried to replace a
ZIP drive myself) an internal additional hard drive, 20 GB, for full system
backup to supplement the ZIP that I use for day-to-day data backup. I also
have Xy 3+ on a state-of-the-art-as-it-was circa 1993 Wang 386, which I
haven't used in years.
Here's the question: Is NotaBene a wise choice to make now for a
successor to XyWin? I assume from earlier discussions that TTG no longer has
much interest in maintaining XyWrite. But the pricetag for Scholar's Work
Station, even discounted for XyWriters, is still hefty at $199 and the
program has more in it than I'm likely to need.
My work is journalism; though I'm retired as editorial page editor of the
Star Tribune in Minneapolis, I continue to write a column and contribute
occasionally to other journals. (The newspaper's Atex explains my affinity
for XyWrite.) But I'm the kind of computer user for whom the Dummies books
are written. I've not had the courage to install xyweb, U2 et al, and I'm a
long way from being familiar with all that's in the excellent XyWrite
Reference Guide.
I've had no trouble with XyWin. Installing it in my current computer,
with Win98, went smoothly using the program a TTG tech talked me through on
the phone. Reinstalling after a crash, using the same program by myself,
also was problem-free. I'm assuming, though, that other problems will arise
down the road, so in summary, would I do better to:
(a) Invest in Nota Bene (which seems to be what Nathan Sivin would suggest)?
(b) Continue with XyWin?
