And a win98 dos box - dos 7 ? - takes a long time reading
directories.

Mine doesn't.
If you're refreshing files,

What does "refreshing files" mean?
 it sounds as if,
instead of reading the whole directory into memory and
treating it there, it reads each file's details from the
hard disk - and none too quickly

I have very fast DOS 7.10 (Win98SE) operation.
