Re-formatting from Vista to XP

This may be of a bit more general interest than was my laptop choice question.
From what I can judge, on a given laptop, Vista will run noticeably slower XP. Like many of you, I have decided to stick with XP until Vista is more proved, more patched, and laptop speeds and memory capacity have increased to meet Vista's demands.
So, do any of you know how feasible and easy it would be to buy a laptop
that has Vista installed, re-format the drive and install XP from discs?

TIA,
Harry
