Or try VMware. It seems like there's something to be said for having
them all. One trick which seems to be easy with VBox is to virtualize
OS X but this doesn't seem to be so easy with VMware.

You may be seeing the same issues described by many there; your
error is consistent with some of those reported there. If nothing
else pans out, try downgrading to 4.3.12 and seeing how that works out.

Yes, the DVD is in the drive. And yes again, the DVD/CD drive is showing up in Storage -- it's the first bootable drive.
