Baffling, indeed. To add to the bafflement, if one puts a third
CrLf after "issue.", and adds a third CrLf to the SEarch statement,
It appears, then, that the CrLf wildcard is mandatory when searching for
multiple CrLfs.

Guess what? Leslie found the answer:

"Harry: under condition 2, what happens if you put the function call GT as the
first item in the XPL? I have discovered that often when you don't need the GT
when doing things "by hand," if you write XPL, you do."
I mean, it's not THE answer, but it sure solves the problem. But I like the
cr-lf wildcard, and use it standardly now.
