$X once again

Carl, or anyone:
I'm using my version of $X and I'm running into problems when I hit the
Enter, on which it is loaded, when I'm in a running program. The Enter key
has a lot of stuff loaded on it, and if I hit Enter where there's a ,
it sometimes gets more than one character and strange things result. I had
thought that there was some other way besides to wait for a keypress,
but it isn't . What to do?
