(entered in the keyboard file as S1, S2, .. S7), have you
checked your keyboard file for them?

For those who don't use accented characters, these key
assignments are Xy's way of allowing so- called `dead' keys
- which require a second key for completion. The principle
being that one types the accent first - circumflex, acute,
grave, dieresis or whatever - then the vowel or consonant
to receive it. If it works, you get é ç è etc. If it
doesn't, it's conceivable that Xy would type a ' as an
accent it wasn't able to integrate into an accented
character.

In the keyboard file, the acute & grave accents are S1 and
S2 but a search for
 sN
where the N is the numeric character wild card would
show if there's a misprint somewhere.
