It's remotely possible, but not likely. Do you have any documentation for this system's graphic cards/circuits? Check that first and see if any of the display RAM is "shared"; as in my home system, that will account for the discrepancy quite simply. There used to be a situation--but I thought this had been resolved years ago--in which up to 384 K of RAM was overwritten by the UMA, but that showed up in the POST.
By the bye, I recently heard that some el cheapo AGP graphics cards CALL
themselves 256 Mb graphics cards but are actually "borrowing" much if
not all of that RAM from the system RAM. On-board VGA circuits (i.e.,
built in to the Mobo) have always done this.
