I've heard rumors that it's possible to do things without XyWrite. Personally, I don't put much stock in them.
Even if you could compile an XPL program, how could you run it without
XyWrite? Virtually all of the 3-byte functions, for example, are
meaningless outside of Xy. (Blank the command line? What command line?)
What you could do, if you wanted to train a Xy-clueless assistant,
would be to write a menu-driven front end for your list maintenance
operations. The Help/Menu system is certainly up to the task, although
there's a learning curve for programming it, and other user-friendly
approaches are possible as well.
