Ah! "Free" as in freeloading, "charity as a primary virtue",
etc.?
Yuk, yuk. Actually, I like paying for anything of any complexity: I get
better support. So in this case, I'll buy the "Pro" edition.
It depends. If you have a preloaded OS on your computer, with
all the *installation files* in the \I386 directory, then you
don't need an XP (or Server 2003) installation disk.
Turned out that "slipstreaming" the i386 cabs did the trick! What a relief
to have a Windows-like bootable environment on CD.
As to the Xy plug-in, yes, yes, a thousand times yes. Looking a gift horse
in the mouth, could it be Tame-Xy? Hmmm, that would probably be
user-dependent. Would I have to make my own plug-in for that? Is that
difficult?
Do you have a Go menu? When you compile, you need to checkmark
options for the DOS plugin and pick the programs you want. It
all works perfectly.
Well, I didn't see anywhere to checkmark when I compiled, but now I do have
the Go menu, and I can get a command prompt, but only for the X:
drive--which I guess is the way it "should" be.
Some programs I can run in regular Win XP don't seem to run from
BarPE--notably PUTTY.EXE.exe, which is an essential program for me to log
on to the remote server. I get the error "Not a valid Win32 application,"
which is surprising since it is a simple, 531-byte (not kilobyte!) program
that runs out of the box on XP. PSFTP.EXE, an FTP program, seems to work.
Anyway, I intend to make a XyWrite plugin, although it may be
weeks away... busy busy.

That's fine. Anytime would be much appreciated.
