RE: OT: Net traffic jams?

What I've been reading lately is that there's been a tremendous increase in spam traffic in the last few months (I even read that it's estimated to be 90% of all net traffic...how close to the truth that is, who knows).

Thinking about it logically, our Xywrite posts go through a collage server system, which is a single
point with a (potentially) huge amount of traffic. As opposed to a message I send to any individual,
which passes through several nodes with (usually) an evenly distributed flow. I think the collage
server would be easier to bog down than it internet as a whole.

Another half-educated (and thereby possibly more dangerous) guess. Does it sound about right?

... But the zombified machines have been around for a good (or ill) while.
I think this is something affecting the UPenn server (see previous post about timing
questions). Offlist messages, even from the West Coast, arrive betimes.
