Re: extra space after period

As everyone will recall from their experience in handsetting lead type, the
spacing question is about the width difference of two pieces of type metal
that were made too short to print. ( And later, about a spacer added after a
spaceband on a Linotype.) Their use was discretionary among compositors.

This typographical muddle resembles the 18th century turmoil in English
spelling after printed communication became standard, and users had to bring
spoken words to the page without academic guidance. Even the alphabet was
variable. Greek and Latin, which were learned from print, had different
problems. though oral usage did split.
