I can't quantify the tradeoffs in time and effort or results but, as an
alternative to proofreading, an XPL program, such as FindDiff (perhaps
with modifications), might be used to compare multiple scans of the
manuals etc., correct one version on the fly, and prepare a relatively
clean master.
