I tried my own workaround and discovered another wrinkle:
if I do the loop using the BX function call for the search,
I still get the same error; but if I resort to BC...XC, it works:

TF ≪LBoslash≫ BC sea |[809]| XC ≪IF ≪ER≫ ≫ ≪EX≫
≪EI≫ BD <\#191> ≪GLoslash≫

Someone else suggested trying different delimiters; that
didn't help for me.
