Re: Linux and XyWrite

Friends,

I thought you all would like to know that we here at Columbia University
Press are in the process of upgrading our computer system. The staff are
in the process of having their Win 9X machines to Dell P4s running Win
XP. One of our editorialistas has his new black beauty up and running
and Xywrite, version 3.57 I might add, is humming along--in full screen
mode.

Not more than 20 minutes ago, this fellow edited an xml file, changing
an indexer's self-created en-dash code to – It was virtually
instantaneous.

While I have yet to be upgraded, I have a similar machine at home and I
have had no issues running Xy4. If you search the archives here you will
learn how to configure your XP system to running either 3+ or 4 full
screen under XP.

If there are compatibility issues they are fixable. The chances are
there is something in your startup.int or settings.dfl that is causing
your distress. As usual, and as has been discussed many times over the
years, the best thing to do is run your cranky startup.int by commenting
out each routine therein one at a time. Chances are, when you comment
out the right line, the problem, whatever it is, will go away.

In addition, I have never had cursor flicker with NB. It, too, is a fine
product.

Again, from the archives, to get XyWrite to run full screen in XP:

Before Xy3+ is running, open Xy3+ Properties and on the Program tab, set
"Run:" to Maximized instead of Normal, so that window always opens
maximized. Now launch Xy3+ [or Xy4 Dos] in a window. RightMouseButton
on the Taskbar (the upper blue bar of the window) ==> Properties ==>
Layout. In Screen Buffer Size, set Width=80, Height=25. In Window
Size, set Width=80, Height=25. Close Properties, telling the system to
modify the shortcut and remember these settings.

Now check that XyWrite Default SL (Screen Length)=25. It should
default to that anyway. Close Xy, then reopen it.

Our options seem to boil down to 1) Getting XyWrite working on Linux or Mac; 2) settling (and paying, again and again) for NB and hoping it gets fixed, or 3) stockpiling P III systems as they become available on the aftermarket.
