How about Nota Bene as an alternative?

We have spent a lot of programming time working on column tables and
snaking columns -- fixing more than a few bugs. These improvements are
new with NB version 5.5. For those of you who don't mind an occasional
mouse click or two, we have also added a menu interface for cellular
tables (column tables) and snaking columns. Use the menu to set up a
table and then Ctrl+Ins will add additional rows as you work.

As I have said before on this list, registered XyWrite users are
entitled to our competitive upgrade pricing which is the same as our
student pricing -- $249 for Scholar's Workstation. Product information,
a downloadable demo, pricing information and secure order forms are all
available at www.notabene.com. Or let me know if you have any
questions.
